The Ultimate Guide to CBD

CBD is attracting a lot of attention this year as a wonder supplement. Celebrity fans include; Nate Diaz, Jennifer Aniston and former NFL players Ebenezer Ekuban and Eugene Monroe. While research is still progressing, this article aims to give you a run through of all you need to know.

What is it?

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of up to over 100 (depending on the source, others claim 60-80) active cannabinoid chemicals in cannabis. It contains negligible to no levels of THC. This is to say it does not have psychoactive properties and will not get you ‘high’. The oil is extracted from cannabis or hemp before usually being diluted to a suitable dose to be sold. CBD has become extremely popularised recently as a safe and legal way to experience the medicinal benefits of cannabis without the associated side effects.

What does it do?

The claims made about CBD are extensive and new research is constantly emerging. Links include the treatment of arthritis, diabetes, MS, pain, schizophrenia, PTSD, depression, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders. There is even ongoing research into its anti-cancer properties.

How about athletes?

For athletes specifically, relevant benefits observed will be a reduction in inflammation, better sleep and overall more efficient recovery.

Cannabinoids are potent anti-inflammatory agents and they exert their effects through induction of apoptosis, inhibition of cell proliferation, suppression of cytokine production and induction of T-regulatory cells

In September 2017, WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) released a statement declaring that CBD would no longer be on their banned list, effective January 2018, making it accepted for use in all sports tested under their guidelines (UKAD being the organisation in the UK under the WADA bracket).

How can I take it?

CBD is making its way into a vast range of products. From teas to skincare products to seasonings, the demand for all things CBD has exploded!

Currently at Monster we offer two options for CBD supplementation: CBD Pro Shot and CBD oil. The shot is simply squeezed into a drink of choice whereas the oil is best absorbed when dropped under the tongue. There is no evidence to suggest that high dosages are harmful but always follow the directions on whichever product you decide to try.

Always consult a doctor before adding any new supplement in alongside existing medication.
